Good question!

If we say that we are all born human, then we presumably say that in the hour-old human baby there is the same qualities of "humanity" as exist in an adult. But really, an hour-old human baby resembles an hour-old baby of any other species in its capabilities more than it resembles a human adult.

If we say that we become human, then the question is when? Also, we have the question, what are "human" qualities besides biological species qualities? We also enter a huge slippery slope where we can say that some people aren't human or some are less human than others.

Because I don't think anyone can really resolve the question of when we develop those human capacities like empathy and reason and all that, and also because the slippery slope is too perilous, I think that we must go ahead and say, until we can resolve the other issues, that we are all born "human", and we must be presumed to be in posession of all those "human" qualities until proven otherwise.

Neither of these are true. We are not born human and we don't become human. We have taken a human body, but we are not the body. The body is only a temporary habitation. Our real identity is that we are spirit soul, particles of spiritual energy. We are eternal -- never take birth and never die. It is a mistake for us to think that the temporary body is our real identity. And this mistake is the cause of so much suffering individually and collectively.

They say that what makes the human different from plants and animals is very simple. That we have emotions and our ability to sit down and make a choice. to take all our knowledge and find the best possible solution and pick the best one. and this is taught to us from the moment we are born. So no we are not born humans but become them.

I agree with the person who said that we are not human at birth, since we are very similar to other animals at birth. Emotion and intelligence is not specific to humans, and is a common misconception. Elephants mourn their dead, dogs feel happiness when they see their owners, and we clearly see jealousy when you pay more attention to the other pet. Intelligence is quantitative and all animals have some degree of intellence, and some monkeys even have the intellence of a toddler. The defining attribute of man is artistic ability. No animal is capable of understanding the concept or creating art (unless they are trained to hold a brush and wave it around next to a canvas). I think when a human is able to understand the concept of art, it achieves the status of man.
