We would like to know if we are allowed to carry mattresses on top of our van and drive on freeway?

make sure they are tied down well , most states allow it long as ut is secure , if it comes loose and causes an accident you could be liable

You didn't say where you would be driving.

In USA it is only illegal if it becomes a hazard.
