I have a lot of songs on my windows media player that i want to put in my iTunes

Assuming that all your music is in "my music" just start iTunes and tell it to find all the music. The 2 programs have their own playlists. The music is in a common library and does not need to be transferred.

If I'm not mistaken, Itunes can detect what media files you have automatically. If not, look for an option to search for files. And they should appear in itunes.

when you download itunes, a box should pop up saying "there is music already on your computer. would you like itunes to copy it?" click yes.

DRM = Digital Restrictons Management keeps you from doing that. It can not be done legally because of that. To learn more about DRM do searches on it.

In iTunes:
Go to file
add file to library
then when you find the file say convert
It will then convert the file for you.
