m-theory is the hypothesis that all of the presently known elementary particles (six quarks, six leptons, and four or possibly six bosons) are manifestations of different vibrational patterns of minutely small strings of energy in eleven dimensions. these strings may be closed rings or open strands.

Ye Gods. Explain "M Theory" in one paragraph or less. Be complete and concise.
My guess is any lurking scientists who study M Theory will just pass on this question, as even with Ph.D.'s they have some trouble with it. That leaves the matter up to the amateurs, like me, who will doubtless screw things up, but who are braver.
As earlier posters mentioned, it's a theory that brings together a handful of previous competing theories. It supposes an 11-dimensional multiverse, packed to the gills with zillions of parallel universes. The Big Bang is, according to some interpretations, the result of an impact, a collision, between two universes. Particles are really just little strings that vibrate through the dimensions in different ways.
The key to understanding why the theory is so bizarre is that it is based almost entirely on mathematics. Mathematically, it makes a bunch of stuff make sense. Intuitively, consciously, it's all very strange, like the delusions of a crazy man. Most advanced science is starting to play out this way these days, so get used to questions like these.

Matrix, magic or mystery theory.
It's essentially a mathematical solution to the theory of everything, which unites the 5 superstring theories as one.
However, essentially the reason it isn't considered the theory of everything is because we cannot test any of it in the real world (yet).
Actually, it can't even be mathematically confirmed yet...
But essentially it deals with an 11 dimensional hyperuniverse in which our universe is merely an expanded string contained within the 4th dimension.
