The bike is the least important thing here. But one with antilock brakes and excellent lighting would be a good start.
Most important is what you wear. Good helmet ($200 and up, gives you an idea of what "good" means). Good gloves. Heavy leather jacket with padding and heavy pants with padding (_not_ jeans). Or a riding suit with padding. One of the last two things will cost $500 up. Good boots that extend up your calf. Dress like you were going to fall off, most people do, sooner or later.
Next most important is training. Can be the Motorcycle Safety Foundation class (Google it) or maybe something at your local community college. Having a friend teach you to ride is not training.
A bike will never be as safe as a car. But, its' safety is acceptable to some people. People who care about safety wear the gear and get training.

Hey dude, the safest motorcycle has to be something higher than 500cc where your engine responds when you need it to respond. ABS is a must. Many companies have it as standard, some as an option. BMW is a good start. Japanese bikes are happy revving and hppy crashing too. Go with BMW.

There is no animal. You ride a motorcycle you are NOT safe. I lost my entire femur to a lady who just decided to turn left while I was going MAYBE 5 mph. Rolled right over the top of me and just kept going like it was nothing. Probably talking on her phone and got so spooked when she hit me she just freaked
and sped away. Sad world we live in, get something with MORE protection from today's low form of human.

right here in Australia and interior the united kingdom and that i believe interior the U. S., there's a minimum protection typical. protection equipment that reaches the minimum typical are issued with approval. this helps the helmet to be categorized as attaining the country of sales protection typical. right here in Australia you could not sell a helmet that would not attain this typical. notice the "it is not legally to sell one." yet if the seller is foreign places there is little every physique can do to end them. hardship is, how do you be responsive to that this one did. the seller whilst he could be honest could additionally be underhanded. i in my view would not skimp in considered one of those substantial merchandise of protection equipment. Its unlike your talking $2,000 against $30. (plus transport) lower back right here in Australia a low value helmet is around $200. i in my view might extremely walk right into a save the place i'm able to look at types, verify greater wholesome, get expert help and learn it in the previous I pay. If I even have issues later the keep may be useful me. The eBay way is you pay and its yours. To undesirable if its not greater wholesome for the interest. If its not authorized it is your project as you the two knew it grew to become into not or you probably did not typical it grew to become into in the previous paying for.

Bob has the right answer at the present time...
Your own worst enemy on two wheels are those who drive four (or more) wheels.
If you've never ridden before, find someone who could give you a ride *first* through all kinds of conditions (city, highway, etc.) - then you should be able to answer your own question.
Luck to ya!

One with no wheels. The rest can be a little hazardous to your health as long as there's other drivers around.
