Light is not necessary for fish - in fact they typically will do a lot better without it. The only considerations are for your viewing pleasure, and if you every want to go with live plants - then - light is quite helpful.

In most cases freshwater can live without light throughout their lives but most freshwater fish prefer some light and light can make some fish and plants happier and healthier.

My fish have been perfectly happy without light, for 2 years, without any casualites!

But when i was younger we had a tank in the garage which had goldfish in, for years and years without light. Think there may well have been one that lasted 5 yrs!

So i would say it depends on the fish look after them and they wont be harmed by lack of light

depends on the size of the aquarium, and what type of fish.if you have a heater you don't really need light. direct sun light will cause alge to grow.most fish can stand pretty cold water unless the are salt water tropical.it's when the water gets to hot that kills them

Light is not needed, many fish rather be in the dark because it allows them to hide better.
