Do you know how to sail? We are partial to motor sailboats. We would recommend a boat of 35 feet if you want to do any living aboard. That size is easy for two people to handle, and possible for one to handle in a pinch. Look for one with standing head room in the main salon - that can become very important. A good heavy sea boat is the most practical if you want to do real ocean cruising, rather than some of the more popular "racey go fast" types. If you are most interested in inland waterways and the ICW for example, look at how much water the boat draws -we draw 5 feet which is a bit much sometimes. Buy one with roller furling if you can - saves a lot of work even though you lose a little in windage. When the mast height is over 48 feet or so you can sometimes have difficulty with a few bridges. Mainly buy one you can afford, because there will always be something that needs to be fixed.

"Cruising means fixing things in nice places."
