I mean, we have the sternum to protect it which is pretty hard... how the hell could that stinger gone through?

The stingray that killed him was reported to be an Australian black stingray weighing 150 to 200 pounds. It had a spike about 10 or 12 inches long. The spine or spike is about a third of the way down the tail from the body. When the ray whips its tail upward in self defense the spike comes up and out like a stiletto blade. Large stingrays have been known to drive their tail spike through the bottom of small wooden boats. The spike penetrated under his ribs just below the sternum and either went directly into his heart or puctured the myochardial sac that encloses the heart. Either wound would have been fatal 98% of the time.

In the article I read, it said that the stinger was approximately 10 inches long and it looks like a serrated knife and went right through the ribs. The heart is not directly behind the sternum... it's off to the left a couple of inches... only the ribs protect it.

the stinger is like dagger.. 6-18 inches long dependent on the age of the ray.. very easily.. The largest on record was 4 feet, 9 inches; 181 pounds and had a stinger 22 inches long Rays are ALL muscle and very powerful

It went in under his rib cage and then upward into his heart! He should have cared more for his family by stopping this risk taking! They should have killed the ray immediately afterwards!

Maybe it went in between the ribs.It could always have shifted when it went in.
