Mass hypnosis...induced by the media on a fawning, easily led herd of sheep. We have as much in common with the celebrity as we do the Ruling Class and their elitist representatives on the boob tube. There are many of "us" that lead our lives vicariously through the celebrity or through this new "reality" tv crud.

Its unfortunate, but many people live vicariously through celebrities. Their own lives are dull, unfulfillling, and boring so they associate with the celeb as a way of making their own life more fun. So, when the celeb dies, a big part of their existence and reason for living comes to an end. Pathetic isn't it?

In my opinion, it is because celebrities are a part of our lives through the movies or television shows that we watch. We share their experiences and adventures, their emotions (or those of the characters they portray anyway) and we bond with them on an emotional level. When they die, there is a part of us that dies with them. The part that formed the emotional bond, and we feel the loss. It adds meaning to the phrase "Ask not, for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." (The bell meaning the death bell rung by the church during a funeral, and it tolls for "thee" because a part of us dies with them and we are the lesser for it.)

That is a good question, and not sure I know the answer but my take on it is we as people had a chance to see into their lives and affect us negative or postive so we feel like we really know these people. I always get sad if a celeb dies.

They provide us with entertainment and give us things to remember, our fleeting youth and as part of our past and we identify them with "better times." It was not so long ago, it seems to me, that I would sit on the floor of our family TV to watch, The Lone Ranger... or Star Trek... or listen to the original Temptations, the Righteous Brothers... and... Archie Bunker, Johnny Carson, Richard Pryor... well, that's all gone and all I have are memories and it saddens me how time has changed all that.

We associate celebrity with quality, and feel a sense of loss as a society when one dies.

Obviously one of our societal weaknesses

I don't necessarily feel bad just for celebrities; I feel bad when anyone dies. =[[

.................. as in "The Crocodile Hunter"? Probably because they come into our home (via TV) and add humor, joy or just plain escape to our day! I know he (Croc Hunter) did and he will be greatly missed.

I presonally don't, but when I really enjoy their work I feel as if I know them; I almost feel like their friend. If I hate their work, I just laugh.
