If the toilet is in the bathroom the lid is for sitting on when you dry your feet after a bath or shower. Also handy for stopping small children, pets etc. falling in, or horrible creatures from coming out, although this last reason is doubtful because if there were any horrible creatures down there what would stop them coming up when you were sitting on the loo?

I would think the reason for a seat was to sit on in this case after you have bathed or showered to dry legs and feet perhaps.
Another good reason is to keep infection( if someone is ill )from spreading especially when most of us keep our tooth brush in a holder above or close to the loo. When we flush the nasties away, the flush of water circulates the air from the loo upwards.
Some one answered to keep rats out,i kid you not I worked in Liverpool old goods yard about 20 years ago the old signal box was the canteen on night shift one of the lads went into the loo and found the biggest rat you ever did see but it was drowned by then . so it's not impossible in you home. Flies land on fecal matter in the toilet, then fly away to land on your spoon in the kitchen, for example. Toilet lids are an attempt to control pests and pestilence. And, quite often, babies and pets drown in toilets.

toilets DO flush all over the room bits of water you can't see. it's been proven on a study that when you flush if your tooth brush is on the counter it will spray on there too. So the lid is to close before you flush.

If you came on exercise in the middle of the Salisbury plain and saw a portaloo full up of the brown stuff, you would soon see why. It is sickening, and in Iraq with the heat and flies. Its a man test to go for a dump.

Safety - children and animals could fall in - also in some places where water is scarce, they do not flush with every 'tinkle' - so the lid keeps the smells in.

So the dog won't drink the water.
So the baby won't fall in.
So we can't see the water if it's clean or not.
So the ladies have a place to sit down & tie their shoes.
So the water won't splash out when we flush.
