October is a cooler month in the states so you might want to wait til spring. You didn't say where you lived though.

its too late to plant pumpkins...u pick in october. try winter veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, some lettuce, brussel sprouts.

You do not say what zone you are in, but chard and spinach are a good pick if you are in a colder area.
