You dont get seperate soundcards on laptops, its part of the motherboard. The only way around it is to buy a usb external soundcard assuming your laptop has usb.

The soundcard is integrated into the laptop motherboard, so you can't change the card without changing the motherboard. The best thing to do is get a Creative PCMCIA Sound Blaster adaptor. You can run speakers off it, 5.1 digital surround, it's the best way of getting sound out.

you would need to use a pcmia soundcard or USB speakers which do not need a audio controller. I would check device manager and the installed drivers before writing off your existing controller!

Have you tried to un-install the sound card driver and let the Plug and play install a new driver this may solve your problem. To do this in Win XP right click my computer, left click properties, select Hardware, click on Device Manager, scroll down to, Sound and Video Drivers, Right hand click on Audio codecs click un-install, check that the Audio driver un-installs as well. Reboot Windows Xp will install a new driver

No, as long as it is for any laptop (that meets your systems requirements) you are good to go.
