Put out corn or peanuts during the time of year food is scarce to keep squirrels from working so hard for something to eat. I'm not sure I'd put the food directly around the bulbs so as not to give these intelligent little critters any ideas!

I purchased crushed oyster shells from Gardeners Supply company one year. After planting your tulips, sprinkle the crushed shells over the dirt you've covered them with. Not sure how it works, but I think the squirrels paws get irritated when they try to dig in there. I found it helpful, too, because it showed me where I'd already planted. I believe the product was called "Bulb Insurance."

The best way is to dig out an area about 12 inches deep and as long and wide as you like, then place chicken wire inside the hole, fill with dirt and plant tulip bulbs inside.
Come spring enjoy!!

buy some chicken wire, and anchor flat to the ground where the bulbs are. (cut a few wire clothes hangers to make a bobby pen contraption) This allows the water to go in, but will stop the squirrels from digging them out. When spring approaches, and they start to grow, remove the chicken wire.

oh dear, that is difficult and very frustating. I remember one long winter that I waited and waited for my crocuses to come up...meanwhile, they were being kept mowed at ground level by wild bunnies!!! The squirrels started work later that year, I used a lot of Cayenne pepper and any other old spices I did not want anymore and liberally applied to all buld areas. Other wise, I have placed biggish squares of chicken wire above each clump of bulbs so they can not dig them up and it does help.
