if you put a timing light on number 1 spark plug wire with the engine running you,ll see it aligning up with ,,or close to the marks on th timing cover,,look ad see what the specs are for your vehicle are..and mark them with a piece of chalk or white paint,,so you can See them, there is also a mark on the pulley that needs to be marked,,it will be like a line in it,,or a notch,,and that's how you read them,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.,,to set the timing you loosen the distributor,,and move it until the marks line up good,,you will also have to disconnect the vacuum advance unit from it so it will be right but remember to hook it back up,,once everything is set,,and re-tighten he distributor back down,,good luck.

Don't understand your question.
Are you talking about cam timing, or ignition timing? What's to read? If you are trying to adjust your timing, there in an index line on the dampener and the strobe light "stops" it at the index line line of the pointer. If you clean the pointer off, it is clear what line is what degree. Don't forget to disconnect the vacuum advance before setting the timing, and then RECONNECT it when you are done.
TIP---> A little liquid paper white-out makes the lines very easy to see with your light, particularly if you are out in the light of day.
Shut off the engine before you attempt to mark the lines. (That last part should be unnecessary, but you never know.

the timing tab on the cover will have a 0 on it, put the harmoic balancer line in postion to timing tab 0 you will be at top dead center. B above the 0 is before top dead center, A below 0 means after top dead center, read your scale by marks, usually 2degrees per mark
