If you are writing a date on an envelope that is time sensitive it should be posted on the bottom back of the envelope or inside the flap. However, this means nothing as far as legality goes. Although your mail is postmarked with a date, it is not always legible. Therefore, if you are asking this because something has to be postmarked by a certain date or you want to make sure someone got it in time, the best way to send it is by certified mailwith return receipt requested.

You don't necessarily have to put a date on the envelope, because the post office puts its postmark across the stamp (this is how the stamp is canceled, and shows the date that it was processed at the office that you dropped it off at). If you want to put a date on it, the best place like one other person suggested would be on the back. However, you might be thinking about where to put the date on a letter, this varies from format to format, but is usually put in the upper right hand corner :) Have a Great Day :) - Wally

If you need the date on the envelope to prove something, the Post Mark by the Post Office is the only one that will be legal.

You don't. It's not required. If you insist on writing it somewhere, put it on the back of the envelope. It has no legal meaning, however.
