I think it's just over-concentration. It's sort of tunnel-vision whereby you're so focused on catching the thing that's falling that your senses often ignore most everything else around you. The task of catching a falling object in mid-air under a stressful situation is so difficult your mind probably can't concentrate on anything else.

Because you are so intent on saving the falling item that you don't watch what you are doing - in the rush to save the falling thing your hands, elbows and any other part of your body (e.g. boobs) get all clumsy and get in the way!
