Theaters make very little money on the actual movie, most of what you pay at the box office goes to the filmmakers and production companies and actors, etc, the theater only survives on the profit from concessions. This is why the markup on popcorn and candy is so obscene, it's the only way they can stay in business. As for non-traditional theater foods like burgers and ice cream, it's a matter of pleasing the customer. If a theater offers them something that otehr theaters don't, they will gain market share. The consumers drive those decisions, so really instead of blaming the theater, you must blame the movie-goers.

It makes me crazy when people eat in the theater, especially when they wait to open that crackly cellophane bag after the feature has started (and usually when someone has some really interesting or important dialogue or it's a really scary moment....).
I hate walking into the theater and feeling the soles of my shoes sticking to the floor because so many gallons of soft drink have been spilled and not cleaned up.
If you have to turn off your cell phone, you should also have to spit out your gum, put away your candy bag and wait the two hours or so to stuff your face.
Or, why not stay home, rent a DVD and eat whatever, however you want!?!

XXXX when you go to a movie theatre we'd like you to feel at home. Popcorn, icecream etc are what called comfort foods. The more comfortable you feel in the theatre the more you are likely to return.

It's not like there are waiters and waitresses walking around taking orders - that's why I miss drive-in theatres - you could eat, drink, smoke, have sex, whatever you wanted during the movie.
