i have been using the lower gears when i go downhill, to save on my brakes. Couild this be what it is for or am I really going to screw up my car just because im trying to save on the wear and tear on my brakes?

Ok first of all, all transmissions have gears in them whether it is manual or automatic, in a manual you have to shift the gears manually, with an automatic it does the work for you, the D shifts and downshifts for you, as for the "2" and the "L" if you don't know what they are for or what they do, then its best for me not to really tell you cause you don't need to know. Just let them be and use the "D" you will always be fine with it.

Geez stop the 20 questions.....Just give the poor guy an answer

The D is for shifting automatically You probably figured that out already

The 2 is second gear which means the tranny will not pass through 2nd gear it will downshift to first however use this if you go down a steep grade towing a heavy load.....SNOW WHAT!!!!

The L is NOT LOCK GEEZ.... it is LOW GEAR or first. if you find yourself slipping on snow while trying to go uphill use L and little gas on the pedal this will help you climb the hill getting maximum traction. you can also use L if you are pulling a heavy load to get up a hill as the trans will try to shift and you want to say no it's OK stay in Low a little longer.
I use L all the time in snow as it really helps get the car rolling from a dead stop. but remember to shift up to D when you get going or you will stress the engine, you can damage the engine by running too high RPM.
Hope this answers the question.......L is LOCK (NOT) GEEZ Read the owners manual, it contains an overflowing wealth of Knowledge for those needing answers

It is very very very very(x1000) unlikely if you live in a city or an area with paved roads you will ever have to use the 2 or the L. Most automatic transmissions has 3 gears and a 4th if you have overdrive(some have 5... all depends on the car). The L is the equivalent of 1st gear and 2, 2nd gear. If you switch to one of these you lock the transmission in that gear(it's easy to go to fast in these gears and burn up the transmission an engine, becuase the gears don't change up or down automatically in L or 2) and you only get the torque characteristics you would from that gear. If you needed to tow something, or get through some mud, maybe even drive in sand you probably would use these gears, otherwise they're fairly useless the majority of us.

They are mainly used for pulling away with a heavy load or pulling away up hill with a load on. Some manufacturers recommend you use low or 1 when sitting in heavy traffic but for normal driving you can just use D

If you do use them, use them in order 1 then 2 then D as you increase speed for if you pull away in 2 with a full load on all the torque is taken up by the torque converter and over time will wear it out faster than starting off with 1

The gears are P-park D-drive R-reverse N-neutral 2-second drive L-low. If you were driving your car with a heavy load and not going over forty mile an hour you may use 2. Low(L) may be used when you are going up a steep hill slowly and you do not want the car to possibly slip backwards-could be wet pavement, snowy conditions).

If you want to overtake someone you don't have to worry about which gear to select to make sure you get round them in time. Just floor it and the automatic gears do all the work for you!

You can use them to manually change gears, but unless you are palanning to tow something heavy like a caravan or boat, you'll probably never have to use them.
