It is because they make us feel. I think there is a medieval need for tension in our lives - and modern life just doesn't provide many opportunities for that "I'm about to be eaten by a bear" terror.

I think your answer is the thrill factor like riding roller coasters. The coaster initially scares you, then the suspense builds as you tell yourself and your friends that it's no big deal to get on this ride, then the extreme tension inside builds as you're on the ride climbing that first big drop-off hill, and then you end up with a "high" so to speak in the climax of the hill or spiral or whatever (meaning the roller coaster). You just want to have more!

I dont want to sound like a shrink here but, I think we are addicted to scary movies because they give us the thrill and rush we lack in our lame, boring 21st century life.
