Mostly lack of opportunity and low self esteem. There are a few other odd reasons. Some rich guys from political families join as a resume building maneuver they are typically officers.
The courts used to sentence first offenders to the Army. But the prison lobby ended that.
The main reason is obvious Unemployed and Black.

Unfortunately, words like "honor" and "duty" have too high a place in our nation's military. Don't get me wrong, I support our troops 110%. But the fact that so many young men and women would fight in a war that they don't really believe in for the sake of "honor" scares me. They're VOLUNTARILY agreeing to become cannon fodder in a war which should never have taken place at all. I can't wait for this entire ordeal to be over and everyone can return home with their friends and family where they belong.

some like me join cause they really don't know what to take in college and want to do something beside work at Mc Donald's. plus the traveling is so far better then most do in there life times. The help pay for college, to have an adventure, leave their home town and make they life interesting, meet great people. and the partying is a lot better then college too. well there is a few reasons but the list can go on and on. to fight for your country is on of the top though!

Obviously you haven't served in the military. I am currently in the military and have been to Iraq 3 different times. If you have been over there, you would know what we are fighting for. Freedom, not just our own, but freedom for those who are too weak to fight for it themselves. When you see the Iraqis reaction to the U.S. soldiers, you would know. They will wait in line just to touch you. To say thank you. I know you dont see this on CNN, but its how it is. I would start reading soldiers blogs, checking different news sources, and quit reading bumperstickers that say "chickenhawk"... you might learn something.

Why did you even bother to ask your question? You have obviously made your mind up about the military already.
They join so that little twits like you can enjoy the freedoms that you take for granted. God forbid one of your rights was taken away, you'd be the first pansy to complain about it.

*sarcasm on* Wow, that is so encouraging to the troops. I'll have to bring this up at the next FRG meeting. I bet the soldiers would love to hear it, and so would their wives! *sarcasm off*
I can agree with you on some things, Humanist. This isn't one of them.

The US military has spent hundreds of millions on marketing the IDEA of the military to our youth. They have fallen for the slick marketing and have little idea what they are in for.
