Change the brake pads and/or shoes. Many of the newer cars are made so the light will come on when the shoes or pads are worn down too much

What kind of car?
Some cars (MBZ< BMW and others use a sensor in the pads to warn the driver that their brake lining is approaching the limit of safety.
Chances are that you may have one of these cars.
If that is the case, your brakes will continue to function properly for a short period of time more before either making that dreaded "metal to metal" sound, or worse, lose their ability to dissipate heat, in which case you will not be able to stop safely from freeway speeds or repeated braking in traffic.
At this point it is best to at least LOOK (pronounced "inspect") your entire brake system.
Good Luck

Depends on the vehicle. However, there should be a plunger switch that tells when the brake is applied or not. Click the switch a couple of times to see if that resets the light. If not, you either have a bad switch, ABS problem depending on the model, or a computer problem. Good Luck

Our car does this too, there is a switch behind the brake pedal that is coming off, you'll have to open up the compartment down there, and probably have to replace it, don't worry, it's not very expensive.

Check the switches. There is one for handbrake just under it somewhere and one for the footbrake near the top.
