That's usually a sign of a bad solenoid. A bad battery or loose connections will allow the solenoid to click once. The low voltage going to the starter motor won't be enough to turn it.
If the battery has a good charge and you still hear the clicking -
-Turn on the key.
-With a large screw driver, touch the two large terminals of the solenoid at the same time (one goes to pos. battery, the other to the starter motor).
-By doing this you're bypassing the solenoid (as if it wasn't there).
-If the starter motor turns, then the solenoid is bad.

battery first, how old is it? Replace it first, then solenoid & starter.

first start with battery, check to see if good. second, check selenoid. process of elimination, start with easiest thing first, if its ok, go to next.
