Hey, i know it sounds like a stupid question...and it probably is..but i really dont get it, why does sex sell so well? I mean i get that a hot guy or girl on the cover of a magazine would attract you to buy it...i do get it when its like that, but the hot guy/girl actually has somethin to do with the stories inside. But when it comes to things like a video games or cell-phone advertisements...why have a pretty girl in a bikini on the cover? Where´s the relevance? Would you really wanna buy a cell-phone more cuz theres a pretty girl standing next to it, or is the pretty girl just in the initial attraction..and THEN u notice the cell-phone and go...hmm, that looks cool, i might buy it?

Sex sells the promise of attraction. In other words, the subtle message that the placement of sexually provcative images (models, glimpse of skin, etc.) is selling is "use/buy/associate yourself with this product, and you'll be attractive to hotties like this....just like the guy in this ad/commercial/etc."

The Axe body spray commercials are the crass epitome of this. "Spray on this rank-smelling deoderant like this leering 'everyman' and you, too will IMMEDIATELY attract hot, scantily-clad, sexually-aroused women" - incidentally, women who would never give you a second glance.

This is also why Bebe fashion ads are so popular with men - and the promise to women is - "buy these wildly overpriced clothes and BE as hot as this model".

It is the promise of being made attractive to the opposite sex. This is the "sell" in "sex sells".

If we all lived on a planet where everyone was the same sex, would it matter then?

Sex Sells on this planet, because there ARE two sexes. When we're kids our parents always tried (and seldom succeeded) to make it mysterious and "dirty". That was probably the worst thing to do because we are "conditioned" from childhood to want sex, because it's "bad" and somthing a gentleman and lady do not do.
If we were "impressed" with sex and being normal and everyday, when we were kids, we'd probably "couldn't give a hoot" about it and know what it is for in the long run. What would they use then, drugs?

Does this make sense to anyone?

The truth is that Sex sells because that is all that is on the market. It is like every other gimmick it works because it is the only game in town.

Almost everyone has some interest in sex, but to be stimulated by a picture when that picture is so highly overdone as to become commonplace, is really weird. Sex sells because they say it does and no one wants to be left out.

It is like two little boys beating it behind the barn. I relates to the ego and appeals to the macho man or woman.

Sex sells because everyones either doin' it or wants to be doin' it. I dont care what the item of choice is, be it a matress or a cigarette. If you've gone through puberty, then you should know there is no getting around sex. And the advertisers also know this, thats why they put it with their ad in some way shape or form.

I'm guessing that sex sells because everyone enjoys sex and loves it. The physical attractions also appeal to whoever looks at the picture probably because the viewer wants to look or have that kind of physical attractions--ex. six-packs abs or slight curve, and perhaps that's why more and more people use sex as a way to sell their products or services. Don't you think so?

Selling with sex sells to your animal instinctive side. Yours instincts will ALWAYS be to notice a good looking member of your preferred sex. Once you are looking, the product is visible as well. Over time, you associate the product with something that is attractive to you, making the product more attractive by association.

Just like Pavlov's dog associated food with a bell. You are well trained as are we all.

It's because sex is an automatic or biological thought that reduces us to our most primative state of being. When, we think about sex, we are entrance, oblivious to common sense. That's how advertising works. Get your customer to think in a manner as primative as possible and the better the chances we'll get their money for whatever it is that we are selling.

That is why I always masterbate before I watch television so that I will not be in a sex mode and will not be brain washed by commercials.

Hefner got on to something in the '50's, didn't he? Sex is and always will be absolutely the most common denominator between humans, just as prostitution is the world's oldest profession.
