Why do some people resort to Liberal vs Conservatives reflexively on every issue without talking at all?

Perhaps it is because they can't talk about the facts because they know they are wrong.

If things do get worse in the USA, people here will realize that the whole Conservative vs Liberal debate is pretty meaningless. What will matter is survival and when things get tough people will certainly wish the Governement would do what a Government is meant to do, i.e. help out in crisis and condulct civil society so people are not in the every man for himself mode (i.e. the jungle mentality).
People will sympathize with the Left much more when they see the true nature of the Government againt the people. Look at Katrina, where is the 2nd ammendment there? They disarmed the population by force. No real conservative would ignore that, but since we are so spoiled and have time for such childish argumentation, the so-called conservatives simply passed over that blow to thier principles.

So, if things do get worse, and they might, people will realize that facts do matter.

Because addressing the actual issues takes too much effort for some of them. It's easier to just bash based on abstract labels.

Also, there are some who are so dain-bramaged and closed-minded that they cannot think rationally. All they have is hatred for those who disagree with them, and no willingness or ability to even consider other points of view. And their closed-off little minds are so filled with hatred, that whenever you bump into them, that hatred just spurts out like pus.

But I'm just guessing, based on comments many of them have made to me. If people aren't willing to discuss issues rationally and make an effort to at least understand different perspectives, then the only solution is to ignore their rants and not waste time on them.

How is it that a liberal like yourself knows how a real conservative should think? Oh ya, that's right you guys have everything all figured out. Oh and the first thing the government is meant to do, seeings how you obvioulsy don't know what you're talking about, is to protect and secure the nation.
