The atmosphere is 21% oxygen and the rest is almost entirely nitrogen. We as humans would over oxygenate our blood to lethal levels if nitrogen was not present. Our lungs do not absorb the nitrogen, but it keeps the ratio at the desired level.

Yes. We get it in our food in the form of amino acids, etc.
We do not need it in the air. The nitrogen - nitrogen bond in the air is too strong for our bodies to break. It is in essence an inert gas to us.
You could replace the nitrogen in the air with another inert gas such as helium and we would be perfectly healthy. That is what they do for deep sea divers.
If the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere rose or fell by more than a tiny amount, life on earth would be very difficult.

Simply take a look at your DNA and you can see nitrogens winking for you!
Not only because of proteins , and other biological materials and compounds but also inorder to have oxigen ( indirectly) we need nitrogen! You may have heard the nitrogen fertilizers are good for agriculture!

We need nitrogen for plant life. They use it. Our atmosphere is mainly made of nitrogen. We can not breathe pure oxygen as it is hard for us to use properly.
