I bought this movie the day it came out but it took me a while to watch it (I have a two-year-old so I can only watch my shows at night.) I finally finished it today, but what did I miss?? I was very confused. ***IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, DON'T READ ON IN CASE IT SPOILS THE MOVIE FOR YOU!!! Are the mom/daughter dead? Or are the dad and the mom/daughter in two different "times?" Please fill me in: I'm lost.

They are all dead. The mother, daughter, and cop died in that car accident when they were tricked by the ghost of the little girl (or actually the demon who is imitating the little girl).
The reason - the little ghost girl was burned alive by a cult of Fundamentalist wackos who believed she was a witch. They thought she was evil because her mother was a single mother, and the little girl was pregnant when she was 11. The cult ignored the fact that she was impregnanted during a rape - and they burned her alive anyways to cleanse her of her sins. The burning goes awry when the room of the hotel where the sacrifice is taking place starts on fire. All the occultists die (although they don't realize it). The little girl lives long enough to sell her soul to the demon for revenge. The demon takes on the likeness of the girl, and puts all the souls of the occultists in a purgatory that resembles the town they are from (Silent Hill). One by one, the demon picks off the occultists in cruel ways when he releases demons into the purgatory. However, the occultists found a way to predict the coming of the demons and hide in a church (which due to their strong belief in their faith, had gained enough religious credibility that it is impregnable to the demon and his/her minions).
This is where the daughter comes into play. She is not the mother's biological daughter - she was adopted. Turns out she was adopted in Silent Hill, and that she is the daughter of the little ghost girl who delivered her before death. The demon is using the daughter as a lure to catch the occultists out in the open - they want to capture and burn the daughter since they believe that the daughter IS the demon. The mother and the cop end up in the same place because they were killed in the same car crash. The mother realises that the demon is the answer to everything, and seeks out the demon. The demon explains the predicament. The mother just wants her daughter back (who was eventually captured by the occultists and was being prepared for another firiery sacrifice), so the mother allows the demon to enter her body. While hiding within the mother, the demon would be able to get within the church. This leads to the final scenes, where the demon gets inside the church and carries out the final revenge.
The mother and daughter I think by this time have realised they are dead, and just want to go home to be somewhere familiar. Or maybe they still haven't realised they are dead, and go home.
Pretty thick story. I really liked the movie - for one because of the visuals, and for two because of the story.

Yea I just watched it an have no idea what is up with it. It seems like they just gave up on the end of the movie (the creators).
My best guess is that they are dead... maybe in another dimension sort of, my friend said that the movie said something like you can't leave once you enter it... which would explain why none of the townspeople ever bothered to leave the town limits...

The mom and daughter are dead. So is the cop. All of them are trapped in a purgatory. Dad is still alive at the same time.

i think that they are dead... idk i watched 4 times and i still dont get it. i think that they r but then what about all the other people in silent hill r they dead 2? good question!
