The Pony of the Americas (POA) was designed as a mount specially for children, with quiet dispostions and a gentle nature.

1. Pony of the Americas breed was created in 1954 by breeding an Appaloosa/Arabian mare to a Shetland Pony stallion.

2. POA have mostly white over their loins and hips with dark, egg-shaped spots. Their coat markings are similar to that of an Appaloosa.

3. The POA stand between 11.2 to 14 hands at the withers and typically weigh 750 to 950 pounds.

4. Registering a POA foal requires that one of the parents be a registered POA.

5. To register a pony of unknown lineage it must be at least two years old and meet color and height requirements to be considered for hardship registration.

6. Ponies with Paint, pinto or albino parentage or markings cannot be registered.

7. The POA can be identified by their mottled skin, particularly around the nose, well-muscled shoulders and forearms, deep chest, refined and slightly dished head, large prominent eyes with white around them, short back, long belly and vertical black-and-white stripes on their hooves.

8. The POA is gentle and easy to train. They excel at trail riding, endurance, driving, gymkhana, dressage, ranch work and hunting.

The POA horse breed is no more than 56 inches it originated from an Arab/Appaloosa mare who had been bred to a Shetland Stallion. The owner Les Boomhower, was a Shetland breeder and a Lawyer. The mare’s foal was a colt with certainly unusual markings. Boomhower liked the character and markings, which looked like paint smears on the colt. He was so taken that after various discussion he set up with the horse that he set up the Ponies of Americas Club as a breed registry.

The POA horse breed standards are as such; the horse had to be colored like an Appaloosa, have a dished head like an Arab and to be muscled as the Quarter Horse.

a POA actually stands for Pony Of the Americans. therefore, they usually dont get higher than 14.2 hands. however, there are some cases where they are taller. they are really neat little ponies!!!!!! hope this helps!!! : )
