Well,what you're really asking is...
"What is the point of the typical mmorpg (massively multiplayer online role-playing game)?"
My 10 year old has been introduced to the mmorpg genre through the widely known free game Runescape, all he does is wander around because the game lacks structure and revolves around paying "member"s,and apart from that is mostly a poor, free version of The Sims Online.
The bigger goal is becoming a member, leveling up,and getting shiny armor so people stop calling you noobs.
Heh,you answered your own question. =P
Really, the mmorpg genre isn't great, and Runescape is the first introduction to it for most people, but hey,it passes the time.
Hope I was helpful. By the way..it can be very fun if you aren't the typical player, and act uniquely for unique reactions. :)

Oh its a great game. You up your stats and try to learn a craft an make money. It has a very realistic economy, with supply and demand and a rares market that acts like the stock market. The point is to have fun and interact with other people.

Heck yeah! It's only the greatest game ever. It's like your own virtual life, trying to increase your levels. Lots of the levels include things that you would do in your daily lives. Like, fishing, and cooking, and farming, and gardening, and firemaking, and treecutting. It is really fun, and its a great game cus they block swear words, and vauge launguage. There is soooo much more to runescape than appears. Go to this site.....

Runescape's a nerd game. All you do is play with Legos people, pretty much.
Then again, I love nerds. But not when they play Runescape.

I was addicted to Runescape when I was 10. xD All you do is level up, work on your skills, get gold peices. The average MMORPG.

not much more. there are quests to do and if you go to the right place you can fight other players. but watch out. there are a lot of jerks that mess with people there.

To aimlessly wander around. Beyond that, I have no idea. I have several friends addicted to it and I have yet to figure out why... Oh well.
