Some of my DVD's came in boxes with clasps on the side. You have to remove them to open the box, as opposed to just opening the box. Does anyone know why some boxes have this and others not?

I think its a theft prevention thing. Thieves were slicing open the film and getting the boxes open just enough to get the disc out and not tear the packaging, so manufacturers put those tabs on so they couldn't open the box.

I don't think there is any reasoning behind the packaging of DVD's. They should just put them all in jewel cases, like CD's.
