You do not say what type of Virii attacks you had, some can be pretty difficult to handle, If you had a partition attack just formatting and re-installing will not work, the virus will remain in the partitioning, You have to run a program called Fdisk. Microsoft used to include this package in win 98 boot disk. you can run this if you have it then reboot with the WIN XP disk and let it re-partition and format before installing XP. Norton partition Magic will also allow you run Fdisk from a dos prompt. If you are familiar with the XP installation there is an advanced option that allows the deletion of partition and create a new one before installing the operating system. When you create a new clean partition all data and Virii are dealt with.

Dont boot up with a DOS disc and format, because DOS is only capable of a FAT32 file system (unless thats what you want). Assuming your XP disc is bootable and not just an upgrade, insert into you CD drive and start PC, follow prompts (cant quite remember) but i think it's "recovery console", "repair XP installation" or "New Install XP" take the install option, this will prompt you several times "about are you sure" and will partition hard drive to NTFS, or if already NTFS will format. Make sure you have backups of you documents/photos etc, and more importantly make sure you have driver discs for your hardwear becuase thay are not all on the XP disc

Best thing to do is format the hard drive. Do this without going onto windows, and for that you will require a DOS disk. You can create a DOS start up disk quite easily.
Boot the PC into DOS and you can then go though the format without any problems. Once done use your XP disc to install XP again.

If you have a bootable XP installation disk
then insert the disk into the drive and then restart your system.
When the system restarts it asks if you want to boot from the disk say yes
Once booted from the disk you can format your HDD.
repartition it and install a fresh XP on the system.

A full system reboot- This is not simple, but it does the job. Save everything u really need as this gets rid of EVERYTHING on your hardrive. After you do that close down your computer. Then you open it again and while its loading press f12 ( ithink its that or its another f# then it will give a choice, follow the steps. if you got a manual use that to help guide you, but if not just read everything and do what u want to do it will do the job if u do it correct(its not as hard as it sounds)
