The Omen (1976) -gets under your skin and haunts you for a long time afterwards. Don't bother with the remake.

Wolf Creek -harrowing, brutal, despressing, gut-wrenching

Last House on the Left -if you can find it uncut.

The Ring was frightening along with the similar The Grudge. Probably becuase with Japanese films anything can happen which is the scary part.
The Blair Witch was scary. That was the thinking persons scary film cause you actually had to use your imagination rather than seeing a person in a witch costume. Not actually seeing anything is the scariest thing. Your imagination is the best horror tool.

I'm not usually squeamish when it comes to horror movies, but for me it has to be The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. For some weird reason I've never been able to watch beyond the opening sequence.

there are different levels or horror to me.

If I had to say spooky I would say Ghost story, the changeling and the others

if I had to say pop out and scare the **** out of you, it would be the grudge

if its about possession. the exorcism of emily rose, exorcist and audrey rose and amytiville horror, poltergeist

if its about the devils son, of course the omen , ( the original only )

of course then theres halloween and thats just plain old scary!

sorry if its long but certain movies are a different degree of horror

The japanese version of the Ring was very scary - so much that I had to watch the end the next day.

However, the Shinning is very scary. The scene where Jack is in the bar talking to the the barman is disturbing...

I recommend a Japanese horror flick called The Audition... it will leave your mouth agape and your nights sleepless. Also, for me, I'd say The Exorcist, or The Ring, or The Thing (lots of gore...)
