At the present time, the better hard Disk Drive manufacturer is Seagate. I say this because worked for Intel Corporation and 98 percent of the Hard Disk drives they used were Seagate. Intel never ever used / bought any Western Digital Hard Disk drive.
Maxtor also used to make really good Hard Disk Drives. Their Drives lasted for a very long time. I personally have a Maxtor Hard Disk Drive in my Desktop computer since June 1998.
Seagate recently acquired Maxtor. From the time Seagate was founded in 1979 in Scotts Valley in California, they have always been involved in the manufacturer of Storage Products.
Quantum also used to make very high quality Hard Disk Drives but they are no longer in business. IBM's Hard Drive business has been acquired by another company.

All hard disks get bad sectors due to day to day use, power surges, enviromental changes, humidity, constant use, switching computer on and off, user damage, sudden shock to the drive, formating a lot,no mater what make or company, its mostly as I say wear and tear, heat within the computer the hard drive temp varies depending on the wattage of the power supply the higher the wattage the higher the drive temperature
