Want to get rid of all the grass in my front yard and create a landscape with rocks and bushes only.

If you're absolutely sure you don't want anything to grow, you can salt the ground. But that won't be good for the bushes. Spread black plastic over the grass. It will kill it. Leave it in place as a base for the rocks, and then you won't have to worry about weeds coming through. Just cut holes in it where you want to plant bushes.

Use a pump sprayer and fill it with a total vegetation killer like Killz-all or Finale. Those professional products take about a week to completely kill everything, but once you spray it, as long as it doesn't rain or doesn't get watered, it is as good as dead. Cover it over with a couple of inches of fresh top soil and finish your landscape. Easy as pie.

DO NOT try to dig it out. You will never get it all, and think of the work involved. Digging it out is what ametuers that don't know what they are doing do.

if you can wait a season the most organic method is to use black plastic to kill the grass , works quite fast in the summer months , otherwise you can rent a mahine to scalp the grass up by the roots. or there are different herbicides that will work quite well but it also is dangerous and you still have to wait a year to replant. black plastic is my advise . safe and effective . i once used it on a piece of solid set lawn to plant my garden , i planted right thru it and had a great garden and by fall no grass left alive to speak of.

I would suggest using cardboard or newspaper (at least 1 section thick) instead of black plastic. Plastic will break down the soil structure over time, usually requiring you to replace your landscape (plants and all) within 5-7 years. The cardboard or newspaper will degrade over time, improving the soil structure. You would want your layer of cardboard or newspaper to be thick enough to block any incoming light. Its a good idea to cover this layer with mulch to hold it down.

Rent a sod cutter or a Bobcat and cut it out. If you simply add rock to the top it will sit too high. Rock needs to be 3 inches thick for it to keep it's appearance and not look thin.

lay double (or even triple) layers of weed barrier and then top with your rocks. Cut holes in the weed barrier where you want your bushes but then mulch heavily around such holes to prevent weeds from sneaking through

The easiest way is to lay dark polythene sheeting over it but it takes a while to die off.

The quickest way is to de-turf it which is a lot of work but you can always use the turfs elsewhere

Spray with a good weed killer (Roundup/Paraquat etc.).

Lay a black membrane where you aren't planting shrubs.

Don't use plastic sheeting as this wont let water drain away !

Cover with black plastic and let the sun burn it off a few weeks.
