this is very, very, very old speech, exists today only in surnames and names of towns.

litterally means "the one from an 'Au' ". A Au is a collecting word for swamp,marsh area, fluvial topography - in general, you get the thing ;-)

the "Auerhahn" wasn't only in the woods then---
