Whatever positive things might be accomplished in the 'nature' sense will be obliterated by the tasteless use and misuse of the image. This is a man who was a son, a husband and a father. Out of respect for his family, no way the footage should be shown.
Times of death need be respected. e.g. when Princess Di had her very public funeral, NO photos or other A-V were allowed of the immediate family during the services. And when JFK Jr. et. al. died in that at-sea plane crash, the autopsies were not allowed to be photographed & the remains were (I believe) cremated to prevent post-mortem exploitation.
At another extreme, think about the time the contractor in Iraq Eugene Armstrong was beheaded--some tasteless shock-jocks re-broadcast his screaming as neck was being sawed off and they laughed over it (and then were surprised to loose their jobs?!).
Please, for the sake of us all, don't show that footage.

Wanting to see the footage is just creepy.
As to "how dangerous sting rays are"...I have been listening to the news all day and everyone that is a specialist in ocean biology say that deaths from sting rays are virtually unheard of...injuries from the ray's barbs happen and are painful but they don't kill...and usually only happen when the sting ray is startled. If Irwin had gotten stung just about anywhere else on his body, he would have survived. It was a bizarre accident and one I don't wish to see blasted all over the news.

Sting rays are not normally that dangerous. I swam with stingrays off the Cayman Islands. They let tourists do it. Your reasoning doesn't work.

showing that footage would go beyond the realm of tasteful, so, yeah, the American press will plaster it all over TV, because lets face it, Americans have turned into a bunch ot tactless, tasteless voyeurs who think that watching other people live is a good thing.

I dont thinks so. Just think about his family and how they are dealing with it. Its the same thing when soldiers die and they put their picture on the news/internet before the family finds out or right after. Let his wife and kids heal some before its just thrown out to the public.

No, it shouldn't be shown. His career should not be reduced to a "snuff" film.
This really is a tragedy for his family and his fans. I don't think he'd want to be remembered for the last 5 seconds of his life.

Out of respect for his family releasing the film would be in bad taste.
