If we go back in time I am sure we will find secrets belonging to our family. I have never read a Martina Cole novel but I have watched adaptions on TV.

If you are after English 'gangster' fiction you might try Linda La Plante's 'Widows','Widows II' and 'She's Out' you may also like 'Get Carter' by Ted Lewis, 'The Long Good Friday' by Barrie Keefe and 'Mona Lisa' by Neil Jordan and David Leland and you might try the 'Mr Ripley' novels by Patricia Highsmith.

You'll love Karin Slaughter. She's written a series of crime thriller books which follow on from each other starting with Blindsighted. You won't be able to put them down - I usually read one in a couple of days!
