Do you feel the same as I, that there is simply too much profanity in use today and that not only is it unnecessarily vulgar and without class, but that the shock effect, for example in such classic movie lines as: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn", once achieved by such infrequent usage is now no longer possible and hence a wasted effort best served by avoiding such words in all but the most rare of occasions?

Yes, it is totally unnecessary and I hate that commercial for "Snakes on a Plane" where the guy says they've got to get the mother f***** snakes off the mother f**** plane.
I've had friends that use the f word every 3rd word too and it makes them sound soooooo intelligent (sarcasm).

I agree that there is way too much profanity. It's pathetic really. Kids use it because they think that they are cool because "all the other kids do it." It's laziness. People do have a right to say what they please but there is a time and place for certain words or terms. And, even though you can say what you want, you can get into a lot of trouble for it. I know a 15 year old boy who is now residing in a coma because he ran his mouth to some other teenager and the teen co- ****** him right in his temples. He might not survive. This is what profanity can lead to.

Yep. There is too much profanity, no doubt. Someone once told me that I was intelligent enough and had a wide vocabulary to be able to express my feelings without using vulgarity. I thought hard about that, and ever sense, I always have to wonder about the intelligence of the people that insist on using it. I have learned, however, that very intelligent people use profanity, but more as a habit now rather than anything.

Yes I do, and sadly I have been known to contribute to it.
What's most unsettling is that the more tolerant we become the harder it gets to shock people. Vulgarity is supposed to be the ultimate exclamation point but when ever other word is such then the words themselves lose their meaning.
Also, while I understand they are only "words", they do contribute to a vulgar and violent society. You can't say this without being thought of as a terrible priss and prude.
Interesting topic.

Get over it. i'm an english major working to be a teacher. profanity has been in our language a long long time. long before you. ppl like you are the reason of this reaction. you place taboos on mere words causing others to use it to get a reaction. my suggestion to you is for you to stay in your wordless bubble

I AGREE. People curse all the time. And I really loved the line "frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." I wouldn't have loved it so much were it "frankly, my dear, I don't give a ****"

Yeah...it is sad.
It's just a crude way of calling attention to oneself.
If I want attention, then I want it to be for something good I'm doing, not because I'm cussing like a sailor!

It shows a lack of intelligence. People can't come up with a word to describe what they want to say. And why do so many people need to use God's name in vain?

I think profanity is a sign of ignorance. You don't hear highly intelligent people using excessive profanity.
