I am considering going to law school and of course need to take the LSAT to get in. I have looked over various prep courses and I was wondering if a preparation course is really needed to get a high score on the test. Have any of you done well without one?

Considering how competitive the law school application process can be, I would recommend taking a prep course even if you are already scoring well on practice exams. It provides a lot of practice materials and the mock exams can be really helpful.

If you are having a hard time being disciplined and studing properly by yourself, a prep course can help by providing structure and maybe even some homework.

But, ultimately, it depends on your standardized test taking skills. Some people are naturally good at taking them and prep courses can be a waste of time.

I went to take the LSAT without a prep course the first time and did okay.
I took it again after passing prep course and did excellent. I almost had a perfect score.
My advice is to take the prep course. You'll be much happier with your score.

I did well (168)without the courses but I did use the prep books and did the practices exams but you have to put in the time.
