Welfare; Food Stamps; WIC; Day Care Vouchers; The programs are too numerous to name here. There are programs they have to advertise on TV because no one is signing up for them. I don't exactly know what the gov't's goal is in the "War on Poverty"; But the war is stupid. Some people Will live in poverty no matter what you do because of their mindset. If you have drive and ambition & your willing to do what it takes you can pull yourself out of poverty in 3 years. Example. No Highschool Diploma? work during the day take night & weekend classes and get your GED. 1 year. Now do the same but put yourself through Community college and get an Associates degree. 2 years. Get a decent Job. 3 years total. Repeat this process as necessary to get the income level you desire. Poverty is a personal problem not a gov't problem.

First, let's talk which level of government is in question.
Then let us DEFINE poverty. This is not a trivial pair of statements.
The U.S. Government defines "poverty". It's basis is how much a family of ....(number) has as it's desposal.
Local governments usually follow the Federal government, with some additions of their own.
The Department of Agriculture has food allotments available, and FOOD STAMPS, with insert cards which limit the amount to be used, as I understand it.
There are LOCAL Food Banks.
The Salvation Army and even the Red Cross provide assistance.
Many service clubs, such Lions, Rotary and others, have and do still provide assistance.
