What is the function of the flat sheet and how to use it? I know that the fitted sheet is to cover the mattress but I am not sure about the flat sheet. Thanks for your help.

The fitted sheet fits the mattress. The flat sheet is tucked in at the foot of the bed and is used as a cover. Any blankets or comforter goes on top of the flat sheet. In essence, you are sleeping between the sheets. Very comfortable.

Flat sheets are the space between you and your high-dollar comforter and/or blankets. They should be washed at least once a week. The fitted protects the mattress; the flat protects the overlying bedding.

The flat sheet is to keep the blanket/comforter clean(er). It is easier to wash a thin sheet than a large blanket.
Also, it is usually enough to just use the sheet on hot summer nights.
BTW - They are also a mystery to Europeans, who don't usually use (or have) that particular sheet.
