I'm not saying that it wasn't a sad event. He was a family man and a good person, but let's face it, he had an extraordinarily hazardous job. If anyone is surprised by this death, I suggest watching one of his shows, then tell me if you're still surprised. He took enormous, often unnecessary, risks on nearly every show.

"everyday that God open your eyes, and you leave your House to go to your job it is dangerous out there-you could be killed walking down the street-so don't ask dumb question."

Are you trying to tell me that my job as a grad student is just as dangerous as Steve Irwin's?

More shocked by the manner of his death than by the fact of it...30 years of jumping on crocodiles, and he's done in by a fish.
Honestly, though, conservation and nature have lost a good friend, and we've all lost a unique and entertaining personality. I feel bad for Terri and the kids.

The show producer did and interview this morning on HLN. They were not filming anything dangerous as the weather had been bad the last two days. So he decided that he would film some footage for a upcoming show that he was doing with his daughter of the coral reef, while doing this he surprised a Sting Ray and he died because of it. Even his producer who was with him was shocked by what happened. So this is a shocking event and sad too. He was a husband and a father and no one expected what just happened. He did what he loved and entertained and educated millions of people in doing so. He will be sadly missed and it is very tragic. Just because someone does a dangerous job doesn't mean that you should expect them to die. I know that my family especially my son learned allot from this man. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and his children as he was a good man.

The men was killed by a stingray!?!?!?! That's surprising. How often do you hear about someone being killed by a stingray? NEVER. Now if he had been killed by a crocodile or ran over by a herd of wild rhino's that would come as no surprise. But this is sad and shocking. Rest in Peace Crocodile Hunter. You will be greatly missed.

Of course any death comes as a bit of a surprise and shock, but the fact this man was a celebrity who taught us as well as entertained us just gives him a 'special' amount of attention. Just look at any celebrity death, John Denver, Don Knots, etc, etc.

I think for you to say 'everyone' is a bit of an overstatement. BTW; I don't expect to picked as best answer, just thought you might like to know how I felt. You did 'ask' after all.

I've seen his shows and I am a fan...I am shocked because he wasnt killed by a reptile, which are his main interest. There are only THREE known cases in the last 100 years of a death in Australia by a sting ray (and 17 in the world)! So the chances of his sting ray death were very slim. Most of us would of thought he would be injured by a croc or snake but he wasnt, so that is surprising! :'[

The guy was a international celebrity. Of course people are going to be shocked, yes, he had a hazardous job, but he still was a popular person because of what he did. Look at the wiki entry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_irwin

It's so popular right now that the vandals that lurk wiki are taking a stab at it because the guy was popular.

Yeah. When you are working with such carnivorous animals you should kind of expect a result this bad. I am still very sad of his death, and I loved his show and the animal channel. R.I.P Steve Irwin.

I'd have been more surprised if a crocodile killed him!

The fact that a croc never got more of a bite of him is probably testament to his skill.

but you're right. It was a good show.
