Blackburn Rovers won the premier league in that season, thanks largely to the wealth of their chairman, Jack Walker, who made his money from the steel industry. Walker's millions enabled Blackburn to buy Alan Shearer, along with a host of other "top" players. They lost their final game of the season, against Liverpool, but Manchester United only managed a nil nil draw at West Ham, with Andy Cole missing several chances.
Blackburn's success was short lived, as within a couple of seasons they were relegated from the premier league to the first division, and their appearances in the Champions League were definately a failure, with two of their own players, Graeme Le Saux, and David Batty, fighting on the picth during a game (I think it was against a Russian team, possibly a Moscow team).
