My son has had hermit crabs for years. We kept a couple of extra shells in their cage that were slightly larger than the shells they were currently in. This way, as they grow they can change when need be.

At whim. If the hermit crab encounters an empty shell, he may try it on for size, even if the one he has now is still a good fit.

When they want to..... you must provide at least 4 extra shell PER CRAB in the tank at all times. They must be of the proper size, shape and TYPE. Not only look at the over-all size but the size and shape of the opening is crutial.
Kepp the extra shells clean, free from sand and dirt and switch them out with fresh ones often.

It's just like changing shoes to them. They step out of their old shell and into a new, larger shell.

when the unpainted shell you have them living in embarrasses them enough for them to run away. unfortunately they can't run very fast so usually we have time to find them a nicer, preferably bigger shell. they like hot tubs in their shells now.....and big walk in closets.
