Flames and Oilers. Doesn't matter how good they are that year. Both teams always show up to play each other. Lots of fights and great hockey played!!

The Battle of Alberta is back and better then ever. This rivalry is the best because it goes beyond just hockey, but all sports at all levels...and even into daily life. There is a pure hate between those two cities. I remember a PRE-season game between Calgary and Oilers where a Flames and Oilers fan fought their way down about 15 rows in the stands until the cops broke it up.

Other rivalries revolve around one sport or one game. Yankees/Red Sox.....College Football.......NFL.......but nothing goes through eveything. Got to feel sorry for those from Red Deer who are dead in the middle of the battle!!

I think it was the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche. for about 3 or 4 years, those teams hated each other.
And any team from the old Adams division ( 1979-1992 ) against an other Adams division team. was always a great game.
Any rivalries now lack any real emotion and animosity between players. All rivalry's are built by the media, and just aren't the same.

I think it is Montreal vs Boston. It is one of the oldest rivalries. There have been a few times in that rivalry when the Canadiens have upset the Bruins in the playoffs. Back in 1971 Boston was the far better team and Montreal beat them 4-3. If it would not have been for the Habs the Bruins would have won 3 Stanley Cups in a row. A few years ago Boston had a 3-1 lead on Montreal and Montreal came back to win 4-3.

well its the Habs vs Leafs is the greatest rivalry of all time they have been playing each other for almost 100 years well since 1927 and the Habs own the Leafs. Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs. the battle of Alberta only started in the 80's and Florida vs Tampa Bay started in the 90's and Toronto vs Ottawa started in the 90's and Detroit vs Colorado started only in the late 90's and its only been 10 years for them, so there not mush history their. but you could also look at the Original six with the Canadiens, Leafs, Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhawks and Rangers all these teams were great rivalries back in the day and when the still face each other now there is still so much electricity in the building cause of all the history between all these original six team.

mom_of_4>>>> you sure don't know your hockey you think its the oldest rivalry well let me tell you something Colorado has been around for only 11 years and Detroit has been around since 1926 so do the math.

It would have to be the Battle of the Hudson: New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils. They are always physical games. There are a lot of NY Rangers fans in Jersey. so it makes for more trash talking. You go to a Devils game, and they could be playing anyone and they still chant Rangers Suck and visa versa. Plus after NJ went on that rediculous win streak against them it made the games even more interesting to watch, they are always close. Also after Stephane Matteau scored that wrap around in 1994 the devils have been looking for revenge. Although they did find it this year by sweeping the Rangers out of th eplayoffs

It's true the leafs and senators are a great rivalry....but the best rivalry in the NHL is the leafs and the canadiens...its probably the longest running rivalry there is!

when you watch a habs vs leafs game it is nearly impossible to tell which team is the home team. No matter which city it is played in the rink is usually evenly split. I have only seen them on tv unfortunately, but just how loud it sounds watching on tv i can't even imagine how it must feel to be in the rink. The rivalry kinda took a hit when they were in separate conferences, but now in the same division, get to see a lot of saturday night games between the two.

My opinion...Battle of Alberta.....Flames and Oilers. Going to the games i've never seen anything like it, its incredible. Its not the oldest rivalry but I think it has the most energy, and the most entertaining.
