It should be 'two thousand six'. People just say it wrong. Like when you say a hundred and one.
Or if you prefer, and in math terms means add or plus, so two thousand and six would equal two thousand six.
we know what they mean anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

It's because of how we say it, It shouldn't be said 1999, we should say the year One thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine, then it wouldn't sound funny when we say 2006, because after one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine comes thousand and so on .

Because 'twenty-oh-six' just doesn't roll off the tongue quite as nicely. Wait until 'twenty-ten' rolls around and see what happens... LOL

I think its the glamour surrounding the beginnning of this millennium.. but i already hear people saying future years e.g. 2016 as "two-oh-one-six" rather than "two thousand and sixteen"....

How to say the the year used to be one of those big, heavy life-decisions that each person had to wrestle with for him or herself. I'm so relieved that you've told us the right way at last!
