For two reasons. His lifetime batting average is .367. Highest in history. Two, he was the most hated ball player of his generation. An instigator of fights, a racist, and a coward. No redeeming qualities.

He was arguably the best hitter ever. He has the highest career batting average of all-time (yes, even higher than Ted Williams). He is also one of only two players to reach 4000 hits. I'd say his achievements are pretty much timeless as far as baseball is concerned.

Because he's a legend, just like Babe Ruth. He's one of the players you can compare players today with, but one of the players that nobody will ever be better than.

He had the record for stealing the most bases 892. he is 6th all time in on base percentage with.433. 4th all time in total bases with 5,854. He is 2nd all time in hits with 4,189. he is 5th all time in games played with 3,034. 4th all time in doubles with 724. 5th all time in at bats with 11,434. 2nd all time in triples with 295. 2nd all time in runs with 2,246. 5th all time in RBI with 1,938. and after he's career was over he had set over 90 offensive records. He is one the best ever that's why announcers always talk about him.

He holds the record for highest career average so I'm not sure but I think he might have been an OK hitter.

Good question!! May be it's because they don't have a current reference player to use or compare too..?? I'm sure in a couple of years, everyone that hits home runs will be compared to Barry Bonds.
