Try this small and light program call RxTX32 which you can download @ www.download.com

I have been using it for the past 5 years now, to monitor my bandwidth.

if its a LAN connection, u normally get an icon in the system tray. double click on it and u get a status window.. you will find the duration and the speed of that connection..

a wireless connection would get a slow speed. somewhere about 54 Mbps, whereas a wired connection gets upto 100mpbs LAN speed. unless you opt for a N-series wireless routers or routers built on MIMO technology. ie Maximum input maximum output.

hope that solved your question

If you are connected via a wire, it's either at 10 or more likely 100 mbs. If you're on XP, just mouse over the connection in your system tray and it will say "Local Area Connection: Speed 100Mbs."

Of course, what you probably want is a way to test your online speed. Please see http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ for an easy test, which you can try plugged in and then over wireless.
