Yes, Seaworld has a petting pool. You can feed them, too. The last time we were there we petted them. The are not normally aggressive.

I have eaten cooked ray & touched live ones at an aquarium in New England where they have a "petting pool" with rays in it. What happened to poor Mr.Irwin was truly bizarre, but was just a freak accident that had nothing, per se, to do with it being a sting-ray. Any sharp pointy object pushed into a person in the same way would have had the same tragic effect.
I'm sure he'd be happier if he weren't dead, but at least he lived his life with a passion, spent his time doing what he loved to do, and was a great "public educator".

Well actually according to the news on my Yahoo page, it says that the barb got him in the chest and made a hole in his heart.
from Yahoo.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time."
Still, that's scary.

Yes...but NOT when it was in the sand, and I certainly knew enough NOT to play with them or try to catch them...these suckers are well armed and are nothing but muscle. They present no danger to people unless they are stepped on in the water. He was obviously show boating and it got out of hand...I suspect it was a large one at that! Sting rays can move very quickly and that barb can be slung up over their bodies at amazing speeds. If he was stabbed by the barb, he was playing in a way that he knew better, and he paid the price...unfortunately. He lived by the sword and died by the barb. Ironic, isn't it?

I heard about that too, really weird. I have touched them, although they weren't dangerous, at a petting zoo thing at an aquarium.
