i am trying to help my friend get the gearshifter off. he looked up some how tos online. it said that with the mini you have to pull it straight off. we tried and we still couldn't get it. any tips? pics would help

It should pull off, with quite a bit of muscle.... I would suggest taking a crecent wrench opeing it up so that the jaws are under the shift knob "ball" and then take a hammer and tap/hammer on it from the bottom. Make sure that when it comes off it doesnt go through a window or something :)
