I am having trouble clipping my mom's toenails and she will not see a doctor. I think she has a fungus because her toenails are thick and rigidy and discolored. I have tried over-the-counter remedies but they have not helped yet. She is 76 and will not see a physician for this problem. Does anyone have a home remedy that works?

Swansonvitamins.com has a product called Hair, Skin, & Nails. Also, try a couple of drops of tea tree oil on the toenails after she has bathed or showered each day, or apply VIck's Vaporub. Both of these will kill the fungus over time, but the treatments must be continued til recovery is complete.

She has a fungus. If over the counter remedies havent helped then she will need a prescription product. these are very expensive and don't always help. My mother and dad had the same problem. Mom has to have her nails cut by the doctor.

There is only one consistently-effective remedy for this, and it's hard on the liver. It may not be such a great idea for an elderly person to bother with the remedy, given that their health is more important than their looks at this stage in life.

When I say, "remedy," of course I'm talking about anti-fungal medications, taken long-term--because that is the only sure-fire cure for fungal nails.

And even with that cure, there is a tendency for recurrences. Given how hard on the liver anti-fungal drugs can be, I don't recommend that elders take them long-term.
